This episode of the TED Radio Hour is a great podcast which talks about innovations in making work more attractive to workers. After tests of the 4 day work week around the world, workers often say they would never go back to a five day week. They value the time off to spend with family, chill and go on trips.
“The four day week touches everything. It touches our health… our relationships.. our communities… We’ve been looking at the benefits for the environment in reduced time spent commuting.” Prof. Julia Schorr of Boston College.
The four day work week is shown to work, but there are objections. In the same podcast, a researcher talks about our perceptions to our colleagues. He found that workers valued those coworkers who worked more, over the people who seemed to work less or have it easier at work. This can incentivize working long hours and maximum effort over being more productive and prioritizing well-being.
